I have the feeling the revolutionary Mozilla OS system for mobile is going to make apps a little obsolete. You’ll be able to have a phone completely built on the Internet. No more apps, just the Web, to really do anything!
What’s This All About?
A new era for mobile is coming with the Mozilla Firefox OS open mobile ecosystem. The plans for achieving the new OS were discussed during the MWC in Barcelona few days ago. The innovative OS will be available sometime in 2013.
The MWC is the Mobile World Congress, which is one of the most important events in the mobile industry happening once a year. Read Ubuntu's Magic Moment Has Arrived! to read about the MWC. During the preview at the MWC on the 24th of February, Mozilla announced the names of mobile providers that will be involved in the project. The first lucky users of the new mobile OS will be folks from Venezuela, Spain, Serbia, Poland, Montenegro, Mexico, Hungary, Colombia and Brazil. More countries will be announced soon, hopefully my beloved Italy as well.

App Developers: Get Ready to Big Money With “Foxy OS”
The new generation of smartphones is fully built upon HTML5, which is the latest standard of HTML. Every single feature is developed as a HTML5 application. What that means is: everything built within your phone is on the Internet.
All that you love and need is on the Web, including Google+, Facebook, Twitter as well as other everyday applications. If you think about it for a moment...it is very much a revolution in the way we think of mobile.
I think Firefox OS is going to be a huge success. In fact the “Foxy OS” will give space to a new breed of Web app developers, who will be free to create and sell mobile applications in addition to retain all revenues (app developers usually share revenues with Apple or Google, because they use their markets to sell apps).
Ergo, and this is a message for those who’d like to make more money, get ready! If you are an app developer and a quick learner, take advantage of this situation. Buy a book on HTML, take some course or anyway do something about it.
Firefox OS is still not commercially available, thus you have all the time you need to sharpen your skills plus get ready to make extra money.
Discover the Web Phone
Mozilla presented another project during the MWC. It’s called WebRTC (Web Real-Time Communication), a fast emerging Web standard. Mozilla, in partnership with Ericsson and AT&T, had a demo showing the potential of WebRTC during the MWC.
This is an open source project that will help operators to grow their communication business. Mozilla tightly integrated WebRTC into Firefox, so that operators can distribute their services to new directions. But not only businesses are going to take advantage of the new technology, users too.
In fact, during the demo consumers were able to try WebRTC on their smartphone’s and desktop’s browser. In a very near future you’ll be able to perform things like:
- Making video calls plus video conferences from within the Web.
- File sharing with friends, family or work colleagues.
- Having real-time communication across the Internet.
- Shopping online as well as calling, always from the Web, a customer service representative if you need to have more info about a particular product or service you are looking at on a website.
- Share almost anything on your desktop computer or smartphone: videos, photos, articles, links and news.
- And much more.
