If you are looking for an “all-in-one computer“, the Samsung Chromebook is the perfect candidate. It's fast, easy to use, updates automatically and no viruses can damage it. I wonder...can it make coffee and eggs in the morning? Not yet folks, but it seems to have everything else you need. Let’s see a little more details.
I decided to write this Samsung Chromebook review because I actually need to buy a new laptop. I probably have of the slowest laptop in the history of laptops, ergo really need a new one. I thought to do a little research and post the results in here.
Let me tell you straight away what I liked and disliked of this personal computer:
- According to my research: the device is very fast in starting process, has antivirus system built-in, and runs all Google apps plus non-Google apps too. In fact it comes with pre-installed Google Search, Gmail, YouTube, Hangouts so you have everything in one place. Very light (see table below). 100 GB Google Drive space versus the normal 5 GB allowed with a Gmail account.
- What I am not very excited about is: battery life (see table below) plus the fact you can keep your Google Drive 100 GB storage for 2 years only. After the 2 years you have to start paying, or maybe just stop using it.
Something more to mention is the Chromebook comes in 2 versions: Chromebook Wi-Fi and Chromebook 3G. What to get though? Let's continue to see more details.
All in one computer
At first glance, the Samsung Chromebook seems to have all the things you need to be satisfied, such as:
- The laptop apparently gets better and better by the day. You get all updates automatically.
- You can boot it up in less than 10 seconds in the morning, it restarts very fastly from sleeping mode, and – most importantly – loads web pages very, very fastly.
- As I indicated above you get a lot of Google built-in apps, such as Search, Gmail, Docs in addition to many more that you can download from the Chrome web store.
- Chromebook has a security system through which you do not need to have anti-virus software at all. That’s perhaps the thing I like the most.

Body & Design
The Samsung Chromebook has an excellent design, if you ask me. It’s slim and light, just what you’d expect from a laptop these days. As you can see from the table above it is an 11.40 x 8.09 x 0.69 inches laptop which equals to 28.95 x 20.54 x 1.75 centimeters. It weighs 2.4 pounds, which is 1.08 Kilograms. It’s indeed a light device.
I assume both 3G and Wi-Fi have the same design. I cannot find any difference at all between the two.
The HD Display
Since Chromebook is a Samsung product, the image quality should be outstanding. The device has HD LED display, which should deliver smooth, crisp text and crystal clear visuals.
I have a Samsung smartphone myself, the image quality is spectacular. And if it is like that on a smartphone, I suppose it'd be even better on a laptop.
The Operating System
Chromebook runs Chrome OS, an operating system that has multiple levels of security. As I said earlier, Chromebook is extremely easy to use, plus doesn't slow down after a while of using it.
Moreover, you get free and automatic - no need to check your self - updates often enough, so your device always stays on top of its category.
The Dual Core Processor
The laptop has a dual core processor, which of course delivers optimal performance. A dual core processor not only allows higher performance, but uses slightly less power than 2 coupled single core processors, therefore consuming less battery's energy.
One other thing that gets me about Chromebook is that, unlike other personal computers on the market today, it doesn't have a fan, meaning it always keeps cool on your lap and is very silent as well.
Get Online While on a Plane
That is another cool thing about this personal computer. You can stay connected while flying on an airplane. Chromebook comes with a free Gogo in-air internet pass. That is a new technology that allows you to get online while at 10,000 feet above the ground. How cool!?.
Note: I am getting an article together about Gogo in-air Internet pass, ergo: stay tuned, and subscribe to the newsletter.
Work Together With Colleagues on Documents
Wirth Chromebook you can create documents of any kind. If you use spreadsheets, drawings or presentations just use apps such as Google Docs, SlideRocket, Zoho etc.
All the productivity apps that you can install on your laptop lets you work with your work colleagues in real-time, have access to all your documents from other computers, and of course your files will always be automatically backed up. This is pretty much the same thing you can do today from Google Drive. I do the same every day, although through my browser, not from my laptop.
Furthermore, you can view any other kind of files through a built-in PDF document viewer.
Your Google Drive Gets Bigger
As indicated above, when you buy the Chromebook you get automatically a 100GB space Google Drive account (usually just 5GB). That is a quite big account. With that amount of space you get to keep all your favorite apps, work documents, videos, photos, safe on a big cloud, so not to bother yourself anymore to download/upload everything on the hard drive.
The multi-touch touch-pad is larger than normal, so you can enjoy better control of your computer. The touch-pad has a glass coating and image sensor, which makes the Chromebook much more stylish than any other personal computers.
As you can see from the image above the keyboard has all the essential stuff you’d want from a notebook.
You can use up to 7 ports on Chromebook; this gives you greater flexibility. See specs table above for details.
Lower Cost of Ownership
Not only the price is competitive (last time I checked it was $279 for the Wi/Fi model and $409.99 for 3G model from Amazon's page), but also the “cost of ownership” is extremely low. Why? Because you don't need to buy software licenses, security packages etc. Thus, laptop maintenance costs are up to 70% lower, compared to traditional computers.
