The World’s Gone Mobile

Are you ready to get into Mozilla’s famous video competition? Firefox Flicks is back after last year's huge success of around 400 videos received from thousands of filmmakers all around the world. You can create your short video, or Flick, and perhaps win the competition.

Win Great Prices!

Firefox Flicks is basically a video contest. And, as I said earlier, you can get into the contest, make a video that helps telling Firefox’s story, as well as win a price. It is a chance for you to send a message to Firefox users out there, get rewarded, and being judged by celebrities. In short, if you work in the industry, you should not let this is opportunity go.

This year’s topic is “Get Mobilized”. You create your short video and will be judged by international recognised figures. There will be six judges, but still the names are not available.

There are a number of different ways to win prices:

  • If you are an “early bird”, you get the chance to win multiple $1,000 prices just for submitting your flick in advance. Be sure to check back on this page on February the 13th for precise dates and more info.
  • You can win regional prices: the contest regions are Europe, Asia, North America and Latin America. Prices will be $5,000 plus $2,500 for the top two videos.
  • Moreover, there is a “people’s choice award” which means that even if your video does not win top prices, but had enough votes, you will win a small price in addition to be able to post your video on Firefox Flicks’ channels, thus putting your flick in front of millions of viewers.

Ergo, even if you do not win top prices, you may definitely benefit by participating in the contest.

2012 Winners

Last year contest was a huge success. People submitted more than 400 videos, with some of them being viewed at the Cannes Festival. The Cannes International Film Festival, held in Cannes (France), is one of the most famous annual movies festivals on the planet. It previews new films and documentaries, of all genres, from all around the world.

I chose a couple of flicks among the 2012 winners, just to give you an idea of what this is all about.

The one above is entitled “Where the Weird Things Are Not”, by Ferran Brooks, from Spain.

And this second flick is named “Fenwick & Candy”, by Gavin Fenwick Christensen, from Australia.

Getting Mobilized

We have the Web in our hands today. Mozilla launched the global video competition to educate people, like you and me, on the possibilities smartphones give us today. Mobile phones rock because:

  • It means being more connected to one another.
  • It is a no-barrier entry to the exciting Internet world.
  • It enables more people to take advantage of the power of the Web.
  • It enables people to connect, create, participate and access to content otherwise difficult to find.

So, when you will produce your flick for the Firefox Flicks’ competition, keep in mind the following guidelines:

  • You should aim to show what having the Web in your hands really means.
  • How it affects people around you.
  • Your video has to be 60 seconds or less.
  • It is forbidden showing branded mobile devices in your flick.
  • Your video may be animated or live, or both if you wish.
  • You may add fun, seriousness or whatever you want, as long as you are creative, original, inspiring and optimistic.
  • Talk as you were speaking to ordinary people, and not computer programmers or geeks.

Some More You Should Know

  • There are no specific categories your video has to fall under. It can be a mini action movie, a cartoon, a 3D flick or a simple video from your own mobile device. Ergo, your imagination is the limit.
  • You will be able to submit your video on the 13th of February 2013. Keep checking this page regularly to be sure you do not miss out.
  • Your flick will be judged based upon quality, editing, and creative approach.
  • If your video is not in English language, you need to provide subtitles or include translation.
  • Your flick must be submitted under a Creative Commons-NonCommercial-ShareAlike License.
  • You may submit as many flicks as you want, but under different entry each time.
  • The contest is obviously open to international participants.
  • Universities, with their students, are welcome to participate.
  • You may use Firefox logo in your video (click here to know more).
